Chapter Twelve

Cassie stripped off her dress and threw it on the bed with the other five she’d tried and discarded. A knock at the door had her scrambling for her robe. “I’m coming.” With her luck, Alex was here early, and would find her half-naked with no babysitter. Holding the terrycloth together, she peered through the peephole.

It was Mollie, thank heavens. Turning the lock, she let her in.

“I got your message and came right over.” She eyed Cassie’s ugly orange robe. “And none too soon. Shouldn’t you be dressed by now?”

“Yes, and I would be, but Mom canceling kind of threw off my schedule.”

“Is she okay?”

“She will be. It’s just strep throat. But she’s contagious until she’s been on the antibiotics a few days, so—”

“So I’m here to save the day. No problem. Emma’s easy. You’re the difficult one. Have you even picked out what you’re going to wear?”

She thought of her torn-apart closet and winced. “Not exactly.”

“And when is he picking you up?”

She checked the clock. “Any minute.”

“Well, I’m hardly one to give fashion advice, but I’m pretty sure anything would look better than that robe.”

She had a solid point. “Emma’s—”

“Emma’s handled. I’ll make her some dinner, and then we’ll watch movies and drink hot chocolate. Don’t worry about her. Just go take that thing off before your Prince Charming shows up and thinks you’ve turned into a pumpkin.”

Mollie always did have a way with words. Retreating into the bedroom, she heard Emma’s squealed greeting for her favorite babysitter. Gratified that her daughter would have a good night, she braved the closet again. It would help if she knew where they were going to eat, but Alex hadn’t said when he’d left her a message confirming the date, and she hadn’t had a chance to call and ask. More to the point, her stomach had clenched up in nervous knots every time she thought about picking up the phone to call him. Which was ridiculous; she wasn’t an awkward teenager anymore. There was no reason to be nervous about a simple date.

And no reason to be so worked up over what to wear. Telling herself to stop acting like a lovesick schoolgirl, she chose a simple but attractive sweater and a black pencil skirt. A pair of strappy black heels that she’d purchased on a whim last year finished the outfit.

She’d just finished her makeup when Mollie poked her head in the room. “He’s here. And he’s gorgeous. If you don’t hurry up, I’m going to go out with him myself.”

“I’ll be right out.” Luckily her hair didn’t require much work. A quick brushing and she was as ready as she was going to get.

In the living room, she found Alex sitting on the floor, coloring with Emma. Relaxed, lounging in her living room with her daughter, he looked like a dream come true. What would it be like to have this kind of scene every night?

Whoa. Tonight was about dinner, not happily-ever-after. She was going to scare him off before they got out the door.
